The thread — Jiangnan — the cradle of Chinese classical aesthetics, where poetry, ink painting, and garden design were born and refined over a thousand years.

The story

Jiangnan is the soft-landscape heart of Chinese culture. 'Borrowed scenery' was perfected in Suzhou's gardens here, and went on to shape Japan's Katsura Villa and Korea's Changdeokgung. Bai Juyi built West Lake's causeway; Su Shi dredged the lake; over a thousand classical poems were written about specific West Lake views.

This route covers five Jiangnan coordinates. Shanghai for the modern pulse. Suzhou for the classical soul. Wuxi for Lake Tai's wide heart. Wuzhen for the living water-town rhythm. Hangzhou for West Lake. No single city gives you all five — only this sequence reads the continuum.

Five days by road. No flights or trains between cities. Spring is the natural rhythm — cherry blossoms over Lake Tai, willows on West Lake, Suzhou's gardens at peak.

Who it’s for — and why

  • First-time China visitors who want to start with culture, not crowds — a gentle introduction to the country through its softest landscape.
  • Couples and small families who care about gardens, water, and classical aesthetics — not just photo stops.
  • Travellers with 5+ days who want depth over distance — no internal flights, no rushed transits, every city connects by road.
  • Spring or autumn travellers — when Suzhou's gardens bloom, Lake Tai's cherry blossoms peak (late March), and West Lake mist hasn't yet turned harsh.
  • Not for adventure-seekers, off-grid backpackers, or anyone wanting Tibet / desert / mountain China — Jiangnan is the soft, intimate side.
